Point Hope Maritime (A Ralmax Group Company) has an exciting and immediate opening for a full-time Dock Master in Victoria, British Columbia. Acquired by Ralmax in 2003 Point Hope Maritime is a full-service ship repair facility for vessels from the Canadian Navy, BC Ferries, and other companies. A planned major expansion with construction of a $50-million graving dock has Point Hope's future looking very bright.

The Dock Master is responsible for safe docking and undocking operations at Point Hope Maritime  including the training of crew members. In addition, this role is responsible for appropriate maintenance and inspections of the marine railway installation and the graving dock we are planning for and for maintaining the relevant certifications.


  • Manages the operation and maintenance of the graving drydock we are planning for and the existing 1200t marine railway system by directing maintenance crews in regards to machinery and equipment repair, operating the drydock by flooding and pumping it, positioning vessels, and scheduling docking crew and services, ensuring that the drydocking operation is performed safely, within the budget and on time.
  • Determines that the vessel size and weight are within the parameters for the Drydock. Plans and organizes drydocking and undocking evolution, requirements for manpower, tugs, tides, and develops process from start to finish.
  • Prepares for the docking by developing docking and pumping plans, preparing block loading, obtaining lines plans, drawing sketches, preparing blue-prints, and obtaining vessel information, to ensure a safe and productive operation.
  • Oversees block construction and ship support by measuring and comparing it to the docking or lines plan, to ensure that the vessels are stable and neither the hull nor the dry-docking facility are damaged.
  • Oversees and assigns docking crew responsibilities by planning, organizing, directing and delegating work. Coordinates the activities of various players such as tugs, services, and docking crew to ensure docking operations are completed in a safe, efficient and timely manner.
  • Ensures that all docking staff is qualified and well trained through appropriate hiring, providing leadership, training and instructions as required, and monitoring performance to ensure operational and personal safety.
  • Ensures all relevant certificates are valid for drydock and graving dock by calling for and organizing inspections.
  • Maintains all ship services, such as shore power, fire lines, potable water, gangways, stair towers, garbage, sewage, waste oils, docking plugs, etc.

Education and Experience

  • A certificate from a recognized Dock Master's course is a must
  • Certificate from a recognized vocational training institute in Naval Architect
  • A minimum of 8-10 years experience in shipbuilding or ship repair, with at least 5 years working with floating or graving drydock.

  • This position requires ongoing attendance and successful completion of Dock Master courses.
