Point Hope Maritime (A Ralmax Group Company) has an exciting and immediate opening for a full-time field service engineer in Victoria, British Columbia. Acquired by Ralmax in 2003 Point Hope Maritime is a full-service ship repair facility for vessels from the Canadian Navy, BC Ferries, and other companies. A planned major expansion with construction of a $50-million graving dock has Point Hope's future looking very bright.

The Field Service Engineer carries out servicing and repair work, supervises during construction, performs operational commissioning tasks, and provides training for ship's crew on ship systems at locations around the world, taking into account the local conditions, cultures, and customs, so that the ships are kept in optimal operating condition. 

Responsibilities:

  • Attending to breakdowns and carrying out repairs, maintenance, overhauls, and installations in relation to mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and process engineering on all the relevant installations on vessels in various locations on the BC coast.
  • Supporting local shipyards with the operational commissioning of ships.
  • Instruction/training of third parties in relation to the operation, use, and maintenance of ships.
  • Performing administrative duties, creating service reports, and submitting them in a timely manner.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience

  • Intermediate vocational qualification or Bachelor's degree in marine engineering for propulsion and auxiliary systems, or equivalent.
  • Good oral and written command of English.
  • Knowledge of hydraulics, pneumatics, electronics, electrical systems, and diesel engines.
  • Valid marine engineering certificate, 2nd class motor would be optimal.
  • Independent personality with problem-solving skills and high degree of customer orientation.
  • Minimum 3 years' relevant work experience.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail;
  • Quick learner when presented with new information, systems or procedures;
  • Attitude and aptitude are key;
  • Strong team player willing to help in any administrative role as assigned;
  • Excellent computer skills relating to the creation, modification, and processing of controlled documents;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Positive and proactive attitude in helping to support and improve the shipyard quality system;
  • Able to deal with people tactfully, diplomatically and professionally.

 Work Conditions:

  • Physical ability to lift up at least 50lbs (23 kg); and ascend / descend stairs and vertical ladders
  • Able to work in confined space locations (e.g. ships' tanks and voids)
  • Safety equipment is required, e.g. steel-toed safety boots, safety glasses/goggles,
  • Work both indoors and outdoors.
  • Travel to off-site locations will be required;
